Freeport-Adelheid “Heidi” Awender, 77, of Freeport, passed away peacefully Sunday, September 2, 2007, at Manor Court. Born March 1, 1930 in Amsterdam, Netherlands, she was the daughter of Herman and Josefine (Luksch) Koehler. She married Dr. Erich Awender May 21, 1953 in Linz, Austria . Heidi was a registered nurse, working at Hospitals in Linz, Austria, Chicago, Illinois, Battle Creek, Michigan, and in her husband’s practice in Freeport. Her memberships included St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, Illinois Nurses' Association, and Stephenson County Medical Auxiliary. Surviving are her granddaughters, Heather and Ashley Awender ,one great-granddaughter Lia Marie, sisters Inge (Adriaan)Gybben, Petra (Mardik) Syrian, both of Amsterdam, Netherlands, Erica (Michael ) Nesja of Concord, Massaachusetts,one brother Herman Koehler of Amsterdam, Netherlands, her brother in-law, Dr. Helmut A. (Martha) Awender of Freeport; her nephews and nieces: Martha and Toni Rosc, Dr. Reinhardt and Mary Awender, Drs. Erich and Carolyn Awender , Christine Awender and eleven grandnephews and -nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her son Ralph and one sister. Funeral service will be Wednesday 11 a.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church with Msgr. P. William McDonnell officiating. Burial will be in the Oakland Cemetery and Mausoleum. Visitation will be Wednesday 9 a.m. until time of service at the church.
