Freeport, Ill. - Helen E. Underhill, 91, of Freeport died Thursday, Aug. 14, 2008, at FHN Memorial Hospital.
Born Nov. 18, 1916, in Rockford, she was the daughter of Charles and Elizabeth (Wernicke) Strohacker. Helen married Arthur J. Underhill May 20, 1944. He died Feb. 12, 1975.
Helen worked for C.H. Little and Montgomery Ward, in the Stephenson County Clerk’s office and Stephenson County Sate’s Attorney’s office, from which she retired in 1986.
Mrs. Underhill was a member of St. John United Church of Christ and its Tau Alpha Circle. She volunteered for RSVP and was a member of Beta Sigma Phi.
Helen was an avid Cubs and Packer fan.
Surviving are her daughter, Carol (Gary) Jacobs of Sterling; granddaughter, Jenny (Dale) Merema of Chadwick and her children, Nathaniel and Abbygail Merema; and her grandson, Andrew (Beth) Jacobs of Sterling.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and one brother, Robert.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19, at St. John United Church of Christ with the Rev. Donnley Dutcher officiating. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery and Mausoleum.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. Tuesday until time of service at the church.
A memorial fund has been established.
