Obituary for Emma Gittler (Wiegel)

EMMA GITTLER, 94 FREEPORT - Emma Gittler, 94, of Freeport passed away Friday, Sept. 19, 2014, in her home, surrounded by her family. She was born May 25, 1920, in Chicago, the daughter of David and Amelia (Urbach) Wiegel. Emma attended Carl Schurz High School in Chicago. On Jan. 28, 1943, she married John Gittler in Chicago, and they moved to San Bernadino, CA. While in California she was proud to work at the Defense Plant. When John was shipped overseas to serve his country in World War II, she moved back to Chicago. They also lived in Richmond, VA and Des Plaines, IL before moving to Freeport in 1967. Emma had previously been employed by Sara Lee in Chicago and Micro Switch in Freeport. She was an excellent cook and baker who also loved sewing, quilting, and crafts. Emma was a die-hard Chicago Cubs and Bears fan. She loved spending time with her family and will be dearly missed. Surviving are her sons, John (Pat) of Cedarville, IL, James of Freeport, IL and David (Marg) of Elon, NC; her daughter, Cathy (Steve) Buffa of Prospect Hts., IL; her granddaughters, Stacey (Tim) Jennings, Sarah (Marty) Mullen, Susan (Billy) Griffin, Stephanie (Brian) Garner, Annie (Brandon) Coble, Emily Gittler, and Kelsey Buffa; her grandson, Michael Buffa; her great- grandchildren, William, Emily, Katelyn, Isaac, Emma, Ada and Wesley. Preceding her in death were her husband, John Gittler; her brothers, Henry and David Wiegel; her sisters, Emily Markus and Dorothy Funk. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept 22, 2014, at the Schwarz Park Blvd. Chapel, 608 S. Park Blvd., with Chaplain Diane Jochum officiating. Entombment will be at the Oakland Mausoleum. The visitation will be from 10 a.m. on Monday at the Schwarz Chapel until the time of service. A memorial has been established in her memory.
