Obituary for Gladys E. Newberry (Kunde)


Gladys E. Newberry, 91, of Freeport, passed away on October 6, 2012 at Provena St. Joseph Center. She was born on April 18, 1921, in Hosmer, South Dakota, the youngest daughter of Arthur and Ernestine Kunde. Gladys grew up in Hosmer and graduated as Valedictorian from Hosmer High School in 1939. After graduation, she taught grade school in the Hosmer area for several years and later moved to Sheboygan, Wis. to live with her aunt.

Gladys married George R. Newberry Jr. on Nov. 27, 1947 in Sheboygan, Wis.

Gladys and George moved to Freeport in 1952 to raise their children and join the family business, Newberry Wallpaper and Paint.

Gladys enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, reading, listening to music, embroidery and working on puzzles. She was a charter member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church and a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary.

She is survived by her five children, Virginia Weir of Montgomery, Ill., Victoria (Tom) Chekouras of Racine, Wis., Bonnie (Terry) Marsh of Freeport, Norwood (Terri) Newberry of Freeport and Richard (Debbie) Newberry of Marysville, KY; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brother, Louis (LaVerna) Kunde of Rapid City, SD; Brother-in-law, Don (Ruth) Newberry of Freeport; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George, in 2010; her parents, Arthur and Ernestine Kunde; sister, Irene Isachsen; brother, Marvin Kunde; and son-in-law, Bruce Weir.

Services will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 10 at 11 a.m. at The Prince of Peace Lutheran Church with Pastor Mark Luepke officiating. Entombment will be held at Oakland mausoleum, Friends may call on Tuesday from 5-7 p.m. at Schwarz Park Blvd Chapel 608 S. Park Blvd.
